Creating The Putrid Eye

The Putrid Eye has been in my head for a very long time.

I had been drawing impossible triangles in my sketchbooks and on small bits of paper for years, thanks to a love for the twisted perspectives of Escher, Durer and those little pocketbooks of optical illusions I used to receive for Christmas etc. At the same time as I was memorising drawing my impossible triangles there was a lot of conspiracy weirdness on the internet about the illuminati and although I didn’t go in for all that stuff, I did find it amusing when my friends sent me animations. So, the triangle gained an eye in the middle of it. Similar to the all-seeing eye that was made out to be the symbol of the illuminati in all those flash animations of that unique internet era. At that time, I hadn’t any idea of it being anything other than sketches in my scrapbook.

I scrapbook together some of the small drawings I do on things like shop receipts and post it notes into one book intermittently. I haven’t done so much recently because I’ve concentrated on larger  and projects but every once in a while, there’s still a build-up that needs sticking down before they get lost.

This scrapbook of my random drawings has been an invaluable source when I’ve been stuck for inspiration to draw from.

You can see how random and surreal my scrapbooks can become from just these images.

Examples of the evolution of The Putrid Eye

I thought I’d leave Mr Peanuts being stolen by an elephant in there as a little treat. 
